After getting all the information from Jeremy, Robert went to Baron Porterâs house. He was ushered into the dimly lit study where Lord Porter sat behind his desk. The room was plainly furnished and the curtains and the rugs were an older style but well preserved. The only sound that filled the room was the faint crackling of a fire burning in the hearth.
Lord Porter, a portly man with gray hair on the sides of his head, looked up from the ledger in front of him. âLord Pembroke, I presume?â
âLord Porter,â Robert said as he came into the room with authority.
The baron looked confused. âTo what do I owe such a great honor as to have you in my house?â
Robert followed Jeremyâs instructions to the letter. He needed to be direct and void of any emotion. âI wanted to make you aware of some talk that I have heard recently.â
Lord Porter lifted his busy eyebrows. âOh?â
âThey are considering taking you off the committee in Lords dealing with the upcoming regulations this summer,â Robert said.
âWhat? That is impossible. I have been one of the most vocal members in pushing forward this new land bill! There would not be a committee without me. They cannot take me off of it!â
âThis is why I came personally to let you know before the body calls for a vote.â
âWhat reason could they possibly have for making this decision?â
âThey think you have sent a post to France. It is a very convincing argument to keep you off every committee,â Robert said.
The manâs eyes narrowed, and he puffed out his chest. âI have done no such thing. I do not tangle myself up in such a way.â
âYour seal would say otherwise. Parliament takes these things very seriously.â Robert held up a letter, watching the manâs moves with care.
Redness colored his face, and he stuttered over his words. âMy seal was stolen months ago.â
Jeremy had mentioned this could be a possibility, but the baron should have known better. Still, he needed the baron to consider him an ally. âWhy did you not report it missing?â
âI am sure I did not think of it at the time.â The baron made a guttural sound.
âI came to warn you. You may be taken in for questioning.â
âBy who? You are no beau street runner. Who are you to accuse me of such things? I happen to work for the War Office. Are you above the War Office, Lord Pembroke?â
âNo one is above the law.â Robert frowned. Jeremy had made it clear that the reason he could not question the baron himself was due to a connection with the War Office. And the baron gave information about being involved with the War Office almost without a fight.
âMy seal was stolen,â the baron insisted loudly. âYou have to believe me.â
Robert rubbed at his neck. âPerhaps there is a way to prove your innocence.â
âHow?â
âShow me a ledger, or a letter you have penned.â He would get to the bottom of this. The man did, and the handwriting did not match at all.
